Guardian Statue: Ewe
Wooden Statue from the Ewe tribe of Togo and Gabon with kaolin dusting.
Acquired because we had never seen a statue featuring a rifle and a knife. Rersearch has shown that the rifle is not an uncommon motif in Ewe culture as it represents a strong defense of their deities. It may also represent Torgbui Tsali who freed the Ewe from a tyrant according to legend. The Ewe, along with the Fon, are considered the root believers of Voodoo.
Other than a small crack and some insect damage it shows no indication of age.
Approx. 20 1/2" High and 5" at the base.
